Encaustic paintings

For a while, I was working with a very traditional medium used by the Greeks and Egyptians: encaustics.

Painting with molten wax (not cold wax) isn’t simply one of the oldest painting media, but also one of the most challenging to master - or at least it was for me.

Although I can’t claim I ever mastered it, I did enjoy combining it with one of a much newer media: digital imaging.

Most of these have a “digital underpaintings” with encaustic on top. I refer to them as a much more sophisticated version of hand-colored color photographs. I’ve always enjoyed mixing media that you wouldn’t ordinarily associate with each other.
